Mirabelle de Nancy

Mirabelle de Nancy

The area of north-east France in the department of Lorraine around the cities of Metz and Nancy is one of the main areas for mirabelle production. Mirabelle de Nancy is a traditional mirabelle variety from this area.

The fruit is an attractive speckled yellow color, primarily used for culinary purposes. Mirabelle de Nancy is a freestone fruit, the stone separates cleanly from the flesh.

This is the definitive variety for French patisseries such as "tarte aux mirabelles".

How to grow

Mirabelle de Nancy is partially self-fertile. It will bear a reasonable crop on its own, but cropping is improved if a different mirabelle variety is planted nearby. Mirabelle de Nancy can also cross-pollinate with other European plum and damson varieties.

This variety originated in France, known from the 1700s and probably arose much earlier. There is no specific "cultivar" of Mirabelle de Nancy, and it is perhaps better considered as a population of closely-related and interbred varieties with common characteristics, originating from the area around Nancy in north-east France.
