Spring Snow

  • Flowering month: April
  • Flower colour: White

Spring Snow is a Japanese flowering cherry, with small spreading proportions, and a good choice for the smaller garden.

The pretty flowers start from pink buds but quickly become showy double-flowered blossoms, contrasting with bare branches.

The leaves appear after the blossom, and have a coppery colour, with golden tints in the autumn.

History

Prunus Spring Snow is also known as Prunus Beni-tamanishiki and was raised by the prolific flowering cherry breeder Masatoshi Asari, in the Matsumae region of Hokkaido, the northernmost major island of Japan. The temperate climate of this region makes these "Matsumae" cherries particularly suitable for central and northern areas of the UK. In spring visitors to Matsumae can enjoy the sight of some 10,000 flowering cherry trees in blossom.
