Prunus Hanagasa is a superb modern Japanese blossom tree, featuring a cascade of light pink blossom. The double flowers have green centres, and are larger than most. They hang in long-stemmed clusters, creating a dramatic effect.
The leaves appear ahead of the blossom, and are initially a dark copper bronze colour, becoming green over the summer and then yellow in the autumn.
The tree grows with a broad spreading habit, and for this reason is sometimes known as Pink Parasol.

Prunus 'Hanagasa' is one of the Matsumae flowering cherries, developed in the 1960s by Masatoshi Asari, a cherry enthusiast living on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. It is the result of crosses of several varieties of the species Prunus serrulata, the traditional Japanese flowering cherry.
It is also known as Prunus Matsumae-hanagasa.
