Summer Sun

Summer Sun
  • Picking season: Mid
  • Country of origin: United Kingdom
  • Self-fertility: Not self-fertile

Summer Sun is a modern English dark red cherry variety with firm crisp flesh and a good flavor. It is one of the best cherry varieties for the UK, being a reliable cropper even if the summer weather is indifferent.

How to grow

Summer Sun is not fully self-fertile, although it will usually set a crop on its own - however you will get better results if there is another compatible variety nearby such as Stella or Van or Lapins. Summer Sun is itself a good pollinator of other cherry varieties.

Summer Sun grows with a compact spreading habit - if you select the Gisela 5 rootstock it makes a good choice for smaller gardens.

History

Developed in the 1960s at the John Innes research institute, Norfolk UK.
